Frequently Asked Questions
Can I trade in my car before the loan is paid off?
Yes, generally. The existing loan must be settled through the transaction, and any difference between the appraisal and payout must be accounted for.
Does the dealership paying off my loan erase negative equity?
No. A shortfall still has to be covered, either with your funds or through approved financing. Check where that amount appears in the agreement.
Can I trade in a financed car with bad credit?
A trade-in and a new credit approval are separate matters. If you need replacement financing, eligibility and terms depend on the lender’s assessment. An appraisal does not guarantee financing approval.
What should I bring for a financed-car trade-in?
Bring identification, vehicle ownership documents, lender and loan-account details, a current payout quote, keys and available service records. Ask the dealership whether it needs additional documents for your transaction.
